Ever wonder why your personal blog has never really seemed to get much traction with Google? Google likes very focused content. It is likely that it you created a separate website for each category on your blog that you would receive 10 times more traffic.
I’ve noticed focused sites get more incoming links! Maybe some people just don’t link to you because of your photo gallery or negative tweets in the sidebar. When a site is tightly focused on one topic the search engines don’t get confused on what your site’s topic is. It’s not like one day you’re posting about the TV you just bought, and the next day you’re posting about your cat throwing up.
When people refer to bloggers today, they refer to people who are typically experts in a variety of things and maintain a separate site for each interest.
Of course this site is much to unfocused to rank for any competitive terms. As Google is starting to base ranking more on individual pages, perhaps sites like this one will have pages rank highly in the future without having a PR4.
If your multi-topic blog is already receiving a ton of traffic from Google then just keep doing what you are doing. Maybe you’ve figured out the magic formula to content organization. For the rest of us, smaller focused websites are the easiest way to yield more traffic from search engines per post.
