cleanroar-wordpressCleanRoar may be my favorite new free WordPress theme from the wordpress.org directory. This theme is ultra clean, something I’ve been leaning towards lately as overall the freely available themes haven’t been exciting me too much until the past few weeks.

Out of the box cleanRoar resembles a newspaper or blank WordPress theme. There are a few options to select pre-made stylesheets that will alter the style significantly (I like the red one, but Dave said it made him puke). The default colorless theme version is fine and it’s what I usually end up going with each time I’ve installed this theme over the past week.

Another option area in the cleanRoar theme configuration area allows you to choose the layout. 3 column, 2 column, and a few multiple configurations are possible. You may also add 125×125 sidebar ads through the theme manager if you choose.

It looks like they are keeping it up to date. After being launched 4 months ago wordpress.org is showing the last update was just a few weeks ago. It works fine everywhere I’ve installed it, so no special skills needed here.

eDegree-wordressThe eDegree WordPress Theme is another impressive new free wordpress theme that’s been freshly posted over at the WordPress.org theme directory. In my recent posts I’ve been talking about how great some of these new themes are, eDegree is no exception.

I’m using the theme on 2 sites currently. I’m having one heck of a time getting the featured content gallery plugin to work properly, so I just completely stripped it out for now (as you can see here on this blog currently).

Check out this link to see what eDegree looks like with the slider. Read more about this theme and download it yourself at the official WordPress Themes Directory listing.

idream-wordpressAfter several months of not being super impressed by any new theme releases on wordpress.org’s directory, I was very surprised this week to find several new flashy, modern, hot looking free themes.

I installed several of the new themes and ran into some problems right away with many. The iDream Theme really stood out as a solid performer and I’m using it on a few fresh site’s i’ve recently setup and am developing content on using WordPress.

It’s simple and clean, perfect for wireframing new sites before you want to spend money on design.

This theme is recommended primary for blogs.

You can preview it here, download it from wordpress.org, or just add it using your wordpress admin control panel.

Let me know if you run into any issues with this theme.

jarrah-wordpressJarrah great free wordpress theme I stumbled across when looking for a placeholder design for a new site I was building.

With 2 columns and 4 widget areas you can create a full looking site without having 50 posts and tons of pages/comments. It’s easy to modify and it looks great out of the box (no images to edit, etc).

This is definitely one of my new favorite free themes. I’d recommend checking it out if you’ve been thinking about putting together a new website and want to focus on content development instead of design.

Free WordPress Themes I used for the first time last month:

Intrepidity – very advanced search optimized theme. This thing is cutting edge. It’s perfect for tech blogs or about any other type of site. It’s professional enough to use anywhere. Choose from 4 colors plus tons of other options in the Theme’s configuration menu. This is the best free WordPress theme I’ve seen since Suffusion.

Andrea – this is a great simple 2 column theme that includes a header navigation menu. I like it because it’s super simple and smooth. It’s perfect for wire-framing new sites before the final design is finished. This theme doesn’t have a configuration menu. You must manually edit template files but they are very simple.

NotesIL – if you’re looking for an extra basic 2 column theme this could be the one for you. It worked perfectly to create a few simple landing pages I needed. Perhaps not great for blogs, this template is easy to modify and use for pages.

The iStudio WordPress theme is a very clean and attractive template that will come in handy for any quick wire framing jobs or basic site demonstrations. In other words, this theme is a great temporary placeholder until you develop your own design.

Unfortunately it lacks the ability to exclude specific pages from the header navigation menu and a few other basic things needed to make it super easy to deal with. If you know a bit of wordpress codex you will have no problem customizing this theme.

The Suffusion WordPress Theme is simply amazing. It has so many theme options it nearly takes your breath away. My brain can not wrap around the fact that this thing is free.

I normally keep a close eye on updated and freshly released themes (free and premium). This has lead to me changing themes around on sites every few weeks lately. I think after a year of installing several hundred themes, custom designing a few dozen, and reviewing 1000s that I’ve become somewhat of an expert on WordPress themes for the Poor. Suffusion may be the best theme of 2009. I wish I would have discovered it earlier.

Install this thing on a few inactive blogs or parked domains and start throwing some content at it over time.

The P2 WordPress Theme from Automatic is awesome. P2 allows you to transform WordPress site into a micro version of Twitter. It’s perfect for clubs or groups of people who share a common interest. I recently installed the latest update and it has some cool new features. Borrowing from tumblr, P2 now has an option to classify your post as a quote, blog post, link, or status update.

This theme is perfect to share your new photos, news events, or just use as a general discussion board.

Check out the P2 Theme Live Demo.
